Spectrum Brands

Spectrum Brands is the Fortune 1000 company behind iconic brands such as Rayovac, Black+Decker, and Russell Hobbs. MobileIgniter guided IoT ideation and user research on several product prototypes, with our main focus being innovative ways to make some of their existing products "smart". A series of research studies I designed, conducted, and presented helped Spectrum decide to halt development on one product line, saving upwards of $10M.

Lessons Learned

  • There are unique challenges to testing IoT products, including study design, recruiting, facility/equipment setup, and analysis.
  • Always do your research and test with actual end users. You can save yourself a lot of time and money by making a (relatively) small investment up front.
  • It's always going to be cheaper from a dollars-and-cents standpoint to outsource/offshore development & engineering, but be aware of how else this might cost you, whether that be decreased quality, longer timeframes, or management overhead.

Unfortunately, due to NDA, I'm not allowed to publicly share details about this experience. I'd be happy to talk about this more offline.
